Our Story & Mission
SENSIT began with a straightforward mission: to make the detection of gas leaks easier, faster, and more reliable for the people on the front lines of safety. John & Nancy Kleppe founded J and N Enterprises, the original name of SENSIT, in March 1980.
The first product was the revolutionary GAS‑TRAC, developed through a joint effort between a major natural gas utility and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
From the GAS-TRAC to today’s more advanced detection technologies, our focus has never changed:

Looking ahead, we continue to invest in next‑generation sensing technologies, including metal oxide sensors and optical‑based absorption spectroscopy.

Our support teams then provide training and resources that help customers stay ready for whatever challenge they face.

We design and manufacture a full range of gas detection instruments, including combustible gas indicators (CGIs), multi‑gas detectors, methane‑specific detection tools, advanced gas leak survey technology and ambient air monitoring devices.

FIVE DECADES OF PROGRESS
1980
J&N Enterprises Founded
'J&N' was the brainchild of John and Nancy Kleppe. Running their own business was their dream, and in March 1980, this vision became reality.
1982
The GAS•TRAC®
The result of a joint development project between a major gas utility and the Illinois Institute of Technology was the GAS-TRAC which became the first J&N product. Building on this initial opportunity, J&N began broadening its product offering for the HVAC and Natural Gas industries.
1986
SENSIT® HXG
With its durable design and easy operation, the HXG made finding gas leaks fast and affordable. A patented sensor cap prevented contamination of the sensor while the tick wheel helped pin-point the exact location of the leak.
1990
SENSIT® TKX
The TKX incorporated a solid-state sensor to quickly detect natural gas, propane and other combustible gases. Low maintenance and low initial cost make this product the ideal choice for budget conscious users looking to find leaks along exposed piping systems.
1992
TRAK-IT® II
The TRAK-IT® II was a compact combustible gas indicator for the volume measurement of natural gas and propane. Ideal for grading underground leaks and purging applications. It was our first product to distinguish natural gas from other heavy hydrocarbons.
1994
Ultra-Trac®
Unique in the industry, the Ultra-Trac® was the 1st generation of J&N's multi-gas detectors, combining user friendly features and fast detection.
1996
SENSIT® CO
An instrument dedicated for carbon monoxide detection, perfect for testing ambient air and flue gas samples. The CO features a powerful pump, hot air probe and bright LCD display.
1999
SENSIT® GOLD & TRAK-IT® III
The first generation of our 'GOLD' line of industry leading of multi-gas detectors for the natural gas, propane and fire protection industries.
2002
SMART-CAL
The SMART-CAL Calibration Station enabled automated calibration and record keeping for the SENSIT® and TRAK-IT® series instruments via 2-way infrared communications.
2003
Business Expansion
J&N Enterprises relocated to a new facility at 851 Transport Drive in Valparaiso, Indiana. Located around one hour from Chicago
2005
ISO 9001
SENSIT earned its first Certified ISO Certificate. The ISO 9000 family of five quality management system standards help organizations ensure they meet customer and other stakeholder needs within statutory and regulatory requirements.
2008
NEW IDENTITY: 'SENSIT'
The J & N Enterprises name was retired, making way for a more global identity, SENSIT Technologies. In the same year the SENSIT® P100 single gas monitors for personal protection was launched.
2011
SENSIT® PMD, GOLD 2, P400
The SENSIT® PMD was launched for high sensitivity leak surveys. The SENSIT® GOLD 2 became the second generation of Multi Gas Leak Detection, ideal for locating and grading gas leaks. SENSIT® P400 is a four-gas meter designed to detect and warn the user of hazardous gases in their working environment.
2015
SENSIT® IRED, VMD
SENSIT® IRED is an Infrared Ethane Detector used to quickly and accurately identify pipeline gas from naturally occurring methane sources. SENSIT® VMD is a vehicle-mounted instrument used for leak detection, grading, and mapping gas leaks along underground pipelines.
2017
SENSIT® LZ-30
The LZ-30 is a compact methane specific leak detector that utilizes TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) technology to provide fast, accurate readings at distances up to 100 feet, keeping the worker at a safe distance from the gas plume.
2018
AQUISITION & EXPANSION
SENSIT expanded its product line into the emissions monitoring space by acquiring SENSEVERE. Additionally, SENSIT established a technology and sales office in Northern Italy, known as SENSIT EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa)
2019
SMART-CAL® 360, SENSIT® RAMP & SPOD
SMART-CAL® 360 enhances the documentation and compliance tracking of calibration. With the acquisition of SENSEVERE, SENSIT added two ambient air monitoring platforms to the portfolio. The SPOD and RAMP remotely detect VOCs, methane and other criteria pollutants.
2020
AQUIRED BY HALMA

2022
SENSIT® GOLD 3
The next generation in Multi Gas Leak Detection. The SENSIT® GOLD G3 adds GPS and Bluetooth technology while making gas detection faster and more accurate than ever, meeting the demands of modern gas utilities.
2024
SENSIT® ROM
The SENSIT® Remote Odorant Monitor (ROM) is a sensor-based device designed to remotely monitor and record the odorant added to natural gas pipelines.
