Emissions monitoring is the continuous or periodic measurement of gases released into the air from industrial operations, infrastructure, and surrounding environments. Its purpose is to help organizations understand what is being released, identify abnormal or unsafe conditions, and respond quickly to protect people, assets, and the environment.

In the United States, the EPA’s Clean Air Act defines both hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and criteria pollutants that require monitoring and control. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene and formaldehyde, are classified as HAPs due to their toxicity and long‑term health impacts. Criteria pollutants—including ozone (O₃), particulate matter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂/NOₓ), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and lead (Pb)—are regulated due to their immediate and cumulative effects on air quality and public health.

At many facilities, emissions monitoring occurs at the perimeter, or fenceline, where elevated concentrations may indicate leaks, process upsets, or abnormal operating conditions. Fenceline monitoring helps teams detect issues early, document compliance, and take action before small problems become reportable events or safety risks.
